The Knicks need to fend off the Brooklyn Nets and Miami Heat if they want to lock up the No. 5 seed in the East.They're finished playing the Nets (2-2 season record), but they have a massive game against the Heat Wednesday night at MSG.If the Knicks win, they'll clinch the season series and tiebreaker should Miami come back in the standings.

Every game counts, and the Nets just chalked one.On the second leg of a back-to-back, in a game with explicit playoff implications, the Nets ran out of gas at Orlando's Amway Center and lost to the Magic, 119-106.It marked Brooklyn's sixth loss in their last seven games following Saturday's convincing victory over the Miami Heat.

Aleksander Barkov scored twice, but it wasn't enough as the hockey gods favored the New York Rangers in the third period and the Broadway Blueshirts pulled out a 4-3 win over the fading Cats, who have dropped three straight.The Panthers played an impressive first period, getting goals from Barkov and Ryan Lomberg and limiting the red-hot Rangers to just three shots on goal.

The Miami Heat get blown out at home in what was an important matchup for playoff seeding against the Brooklyn Nets, 129-100.The Heat dropped to 40-35 on the season as the Nets improve to 40-34, pushing Miami back to the 7th seed in the Eastern Conference.The Nets have also swept the season series against the Heat 3-0.

Wednesday's ESPN doubleheader has snuck up on you again.There are two excellent games on the docket with the Dallas Mavericks (36-39) facing the Philadelphia 76ers (49-25), and then the NBA champion Minnesota Timberwolves (39-37) taking on the Phoenix Suns (40-35).These are four professional basketball teams and both games should be competitive late into their fourth quarters.

There is no better look at how compacted the Western Conference playoff race is than Sunday night's game between the Knicks and Lakers.Had the Lakers won the contest, they would have moved into a 3-way tie for the seventh seed with the Mavericks and Timberwolves with matching .500records at 34-34.Instead, the Lakers lost, dropped to 33-35 and into a four-way tie for the ninth seed.
