Under the Lower Income Voucher and Equity program approved Tuesday, the city will master-lease nearly 200 units providing a subsidy that will lower rents and create more affordable housing for moderate-income households and enter into an equity agreement that will see San Jose recoup all of its investment, plus interest.
The financial services firm wants to build a new branch and an adjacent retail building on the former site of a now-bulldozed Marie Callender's pie shop that closed in 2022, ending decades of operations for the popular restaurant. The project will leave the existing Meriwest Credit Union headquarters in place at its present location in San Jose. The credit union now operates a branch inside its main office at 5615 Chesbro Ave.

The tech company's project is slated to sprout at 550 East Brokaw Road in north San Jose, a property where Fry's once operated a consumer electronics store with a distinctive Mayan theme.
SAN JOSE Two eye-catching housing towers that would sprout atop the site of a San Jose parking lot have received final city approval in a fresh sign that developers continue to scout for ways to step away from office projects. The towers would produce 768 residential units at 35 South Second St. in downtown San Jose, according to the just-approved proposal that was submitted by global mega-developer Westbank, which has proposed several projects in the city's urban core.
