Man posing as transgender woman raped female prisoner at Rikers, lawsuit says

A former prisoner in the Rose M. Singer women's jail on Rikers Island is suing New York City for allegedly ignoring her warnings about a transgender woman who she believed was actually a man pretending to be a woman.
The plaintiff claims that the alleged perpetrator was instructed by the Department of Corrections staff to claim transgender identity in order to stay in the female dorm and have access to female inmates.
The plaintiff reported multiple instances of sexual assault by the alleged perpetrator and accuses correction officers of failing to remove the imposter from female housing. [ more ]
