An Essex couple have become the first people in the country to trial a scheme that sees them heat their home using a data centre in their garden shed. Terrence and Lesley Bridges have seen their energy bills drop dramatically, from 375 a month down to as low as 40, since they swapped their gas boiler for a HeatHub a small data centre containing more than 500 computers. Data centres are banks of computers which carry out digital tasks.
This Labour government is all in on action to tackle the climate crisis because it is the way to secure better lives for people in Britain today and protect future generations tomorrow. This plan sets out the ambitious actions we have taken in our first 15 months unleashing investment, creating jobs, rebuilding our energy security. Meanwhile, our political opponents have embarked down an anti-jobs, anti-science path that would spell disaster for our economy, our security and our planet.
Kemi Badenoch has committed the party to repealing the Climate Change Act and abandoning the commitment to reach net zero by 2050, arguing that the target threatens to bankrupt Britain. The repeal of the act would remove the need to meet carbon budgets ceilings, set for five-year periods, on the amount of greenhouse gas that can be emitted and disband the Climate Change Committee – a watchdog that advises on how policies affect the UK's carbon footprint.
The prime minister will attend the Cop30 climate summit in Belem, Brazil, next month, because net zero is the economic opportunity of the 21st century, one that has the potential to reignite our industrial heartlands, create good jobs for the future, and lower bills in the long term. That's why we're restoring the UK as a global leader on climate action and green growth. And you can expect to see the PM driving forward that agenda at the summit next month.

The energy secretary told an industry conference the UK's dependence on fossil fuels was its "Achilles heel" and argued clean power was the only way to reduce bills. The UK government is aiming for clean power to meet 95% of electricity demand by 2030, and Miliband has pledged to lower average bills by 300 by that date.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
"We think it is really important to incorporate climate and incorporate sustainability into the portfolio when we take a long-term perspective and as a long-horizon investor," he said.
