Tiny Desk Radio co-hosts Bobby Carter and Anamaria Sayre present performances from the next generation of Americana music: Sierra Ferrell, whose sound is firmly planted in the roots tradition; Wyatt Flores, an Oklahoman "red dirt" country singer; and MJ Lenderman, an indie rocker who doubles as the guitarist for the band Wednesday. MJ Lenderman and his backing band The Wind played Wilco's Mexico destination festival Sky Blue Sky on Friday, and he closed out his set by bringing out one of his musical heroes, J Mascis (whose band Dinosaur Jr are playing Sunday), to cover a song by one of their shared musical heroes, Neil Young. They did a jammed-out rendition of "Lotta Love" from 1978's Comes A Time, turning the two-and-a-half-minute song into eight minutes of guitar-solo-filled bliss. Check out a video below.
Will Johnson (Centro-matic, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit) and the late Jason Molina's former band Magnolia Electric Co have been touring together as Magnolia & Johnson Electric Co, and on Friday night (10/12) they stopped in Asheville, NC for a show at The Grey Eagle, where they brought out a very notable Asheville native, MJ Lenderman. He joined them on a rendition of "The Dark Don't Hide It," and you can watch attendee-taken video below.
