Searching in infrared finds a big collection of black hole star destruction

Tidal disruption events (TDEs), where supermassive black holes tear apart stars, are thought to occur once every 10,000 to 100,000 years in any given galaxy.
An international team of researchers discovered 18 TDEs that previous searches had missed by checking galaxies in the infrared rather than the optical or X-ray bands. [ more ]
