Chelsea had started brightly in a strong first half, with Phallon Tullis-Joyce making some fine saves to keep the scoreline level. Girma also saw an effort cleared off the line before the break, but the Blues finally found the breakthrough in the 78th minute as Sam Kerr came off the bench to turn in Veerle Buurman's knockdown. However, United were back on level terms just three minutes later as substitute Simi Awujo arrived at the back post to profit during a scramble in the box.
Brighton were thumped 3-0 by Liverpool at Anfield last Saturday, with Curtis Jones, Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah all on target in a comfortable win for the Reds. It was a result that meant the Seagulls have now won just two of their last 15 games in all competitions (D6 L7), losing three on the bounce without scoring for the first time since March 2024, piling the pressure on Hurzeler.
MACCLESFIELD, England -- The used car salesman and the captain who sells scented candles have reached the end of the road after Macclesfield's fairytale FA Cup run was ended by an own goal from a PE teacher against Premier League Brentford. Sam Heathcote's unfortunate (and acrobatic) header from Aaron Hickey's 70th minute cross, which diverted past goalkeeper Max Dearnley at his near post, was enough to seal a 1-0 fourth round win for Brentford, who will face London rivals West Ham in the fifth round.
The FA Cup fourth round continues on Monday evening with Macclesfield attempting to knock out Premier League opposition for the second consecutive round. Most of the matches have gone to script in the fourth round and it's been slim pickings in terms of FA Cup upsets. Mansfield Town's win over Burnley at Turf Moor is the headline result so far but the cup magic is thick in the air at the Moss Rose.
The changing face of the FA Cup was graphically illustrated by the vast total of 183 team changes in the 14 fourth-round ties played over the weekend. Mass alterations started as the preserve of Premier League clubs manipulating squads when priorities started to lie elsewhere, but they have now been joined by their lower-league counterparts. Hull City made 10 changes for the 4-0 loss at home to Chelsea, while Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna made the same number for their defeat at Championship rivals Wrexham.
Marco Silva's side appeared the most likely to suffer a surprise defeat, having fallen behind to Bae Jun-Ho's 19th-minute opener for Stoke City. But Fulham fought back for a 2-1 away win as Kevin profited from a fortuitous bounce to finish past Tommy Simkin, who then needlessly gave away possession for Harrison Reed to win it with six minutes remaining.
It was a proper traditional old school cup tie, It was going to be a fine margins game and that's how it was - we limited a Premier League team to one attempt on target and it's gone in. One chance, one goal for them. It showed how well we played in terrible conditions. The conditions made the game in some respects because it was a bit of a throwback.
If that wasn't my ambition I'd be in the wrong role, but hopefully I can push Macclesfield on to where we think we can get to. We've got a long journey ahead of us here and it's a club going in the right direction. I want to manage as high as possible and hopefully that can be with this club.
