Shaunzi, a 53-year-old Asian elephant at the Los Angeles Zoo, was euthanized after she was unable to stand up.

Despite efforts to help Shaunzi, the decision was made to sedate and euthanize her.

Asian elephants are endangered, with an estimated population of only 40,000 in the wild. [ more ]

London Zoo conducted its annual stocktake to count every creature at the zoo, including endangered and critically endangered species.
