Dry Cleaning singer Florence Shaw likes to keep some distance between her vocals and the rest of the band. Shaw's curious confidences, spoken-word confessions, and bemused monologues appear to have only a passing relationship to the propulsive rhythms and brittle riffs that frame them. That dissonance can be striking at first, but it grows restrictive-stark contrast can only take you so far.
With each album serving as one big swing above home plate, Dry Cleaning use their third LP, Secret Love, to confirm they've got one of the most consistent batting averages in modern post-punk. The South London quartet allows each member to lean closer to the forefront-in turns or simultaneously-and show off their sleek form, from Florence Shaw's crisp deadpan quips in " Cruise Ship Designer" to Lewis Maynard's polished, wooden-like bass tone across " Hit My Head All Day."
It's hard to sing along to a Dry Cleaning song-and the reasons go beyond the fact their lead singer, Florence Shaw, isn't really one for singing. Few songwriters grant you such open access to the inner workings of their mind as Shaw, whose free-ranging soliloquies can ping-pong between quotidian mundanity, social critique, and dadaist farce in a single verse, all while she maintains the calm elocution of a wellness podcast host.
