"By bringing Party City into Staples stores, we're expanding what customers can accomplish in one place-combining helium balloons and party supplies with our print and marketing services to offer a complete solution for celebrations, from graduations to grand openings and everything in between."
The mall offered us our first taste of independence. By age 11 or 12, I was spending my babysitting money at the mall. My friend and I would promise to meet my mom or hers at a designated spot by a specific time, and then we were off. Just her and me for an hour or two. It was a rite of passage, and we loved how grown-up it made us feel.
"Vending is NOT fully passive income. I'd call it semi-passive, like 70% passive. Social media makes it look like you fill machines once a month and money rains in."
Claude - or "Claudius," as its vending persona was known, but we'll stick to the former for the sake of clarity - had pretty much free reign to accomplish its goal. It was allowed to research products, set prices, and even contact outside distributors, with a team of humans at the AI safety firm Andon Labs handling the physical tasks like restocking. Meanwhile, it also fielded requests from employees in a Slack channel, who asked for everything from chocolate drinks to the street drug methamphetamine to broadswords.
The purveyors of late-night hot dogs, tins of Zyn, and countless varieties of gummy worms generally don't sell a lot of "real food." But in America's food deserts, convenience stores are more than just places to pick up a snack-they're grocery stores. The USDA estimates that tens of millions of Americans live in low-income areas with limited access to grocery stores.
Trader Joe's is now king of the grocery aisles, according to the latest American Customer Satisfaction Index. The California-based specialty grocer scored 86 out of 100, up 2% from last year, while Publix remained at 84 for the second consecutive year. H-E-B ranked third at 83, followed by Sam's Club at 82 and Aldi at 81. What makes the win even more impressive is that Trader Joe's keeps opening new stores across the country, which usually hurts consistency.
The outlook for 2026 I'm watching 2026 with equal parts optimism and urgency. Optimism because consumer demand is still there. Retail sales have remained resilient in recent data. Urgency because the operating environment is only getting tighter. Coming out of FY2025, large retailers demonstrated resilience amid inflation pressure, shifting consumer behavior, and global supply-chain complexity. Walmart raised its outlook and leaned further into a model that blends physical stores, e-commerce scale, and execution discipline.
Retailer-owned products not being seen as a cheap alternative anymore, but instead, a way to convey luxury and exclusivity. Price-Led Positioning is No Longer Dominating UK Supermarkets. Small UK businesses are aggressively growing, with price-led positioning becoming a dated trend. It's becoming evident that brands are no longer using their own branded products as a way to be a cheap alternative.
