Operation renovation: 'I used to think I wasn't handy but now I can actually do a lot. Anyone can, really... I want more tools now'
"There's no white-knuckle ride quite like a renovation project, especially if it happens to be a dilapidated property with a shower plonked in the middle of the kitchen. It takes a certain mettle, and a savvy eye, to see past the mouldy walls and the beauty board, and that shower in the kitchen. But for midwife and interior designer Gráinne Gillett, the moment she clapped eyes on the 65sq m red-brick cottage in Dublin's North Strand, it was love at first sight."
"What she didn't know is that it would take two and a half years to create her dream home. The house, which she thought she could "move into and fix up as she went", became a near-total rebuild. And instead of a quick cosmetic refresh, the renovation stretched from late 2022 to summer 2024. The cottage, originally owned by an elderly woman before her granddaughter lived in it, was technically liveable when Gráinne bought it, but just barely."
Midwife and interior designer Gráinne Gillett transformed a neglected 65 sq m red-brick cottage in Dublin's North Strand into a warm, cosy home through a hands-on two-and-a-half-year renovation. The property arrived technically liveable but dilapidated, with mouldy walls, beauty boards and a shower located in the middle of the kitchen. Initial plans to move in and fix up evolved into a near-total rebuild spanning late 2022 to summer 2024. Gillett undertook much of the work herself, learning to tile, insulate and carry out demolition alongside professional trades. The result prioritised comfort, practical upgrades and thoughtful interior design.
