Good news: Mission branch library set to reopen by spring
"You can see that we're getting there."
"They're great spaces for the broader community,"
"I mean, there's nothing not to like about libraries."
The 110-year-old Mission Branch library at 300 Bartlett Street closed for renovation in March 2020, with construction beginning in August 2023. The renovation restores the original 24th Street entrance and staircase removed in 1997, adds a teen area, children's area, a community room and two additional bathrooms, bringing the total to five. The project includes earthquake retrofitting, removal of natural gas, and installation of solar panels. Initial cost estimates were $19.8 million in 2019, rising to about $23 million and then $34 million by spring 2023 because of inflation, supply-chain shortages, and project complexity. Reopening is scheduled for spring 2026.
