Why Christian clergy see risk as part of their moral calling
"prepare for a new era of martyrdom"
"it may be that now is no longer the time for statements, but for us with our bodies to stand between the powers of this world and the most vulnerable."
"did not sign up to be a martyr"
"this is our call"
On Jan. 18, 2026, a bishop urged clergy to prepare for martyrdom and to put their wills and affairs in order. Many clergy reacted positively and some have willingly faced arrest while protesting harsh immigration enforcement and ICE funding. At least one priest rejected the call, citing family and church responsibilities. Arrests at protests include a Minneapolis airport action where a clergy member said that separating families and sending people to unknown detention centers demands protest. Scholarship links clergy risk-taking to professional and moral obligations similar to those of medical chaplains and other institutional ministers.
