Yin Yoga to Help Release Your Upper Back and Open Your Heart-Despite It All
"Whenever we talk about practicing yoga for the heart chakra, our focus is releasing tension around the heart, including the chest as well as the upper back and shoulders. More than that, the anahata, or heart chakra, has to do with our ability to give and receive love as well as our ability to feel compassion and empathy toward ourselves and others in the world."
"If this is the first time you're practicing yin yoga for the chakras with me, I pair yin yoga poses with affirmations. I find the two work really well together. In each pose, I'll share an affirmation and all you need to do is repeat it to yourself a few times. Instead of trying to convince yourself that this affirmation is true for you and that you believe in it, just notice how it makes you feel."
The heart chakra centers on releasing tension in the chest, upper back, and shoulders while cultivating the capacity to give and receive love. Anahata governs romantic and interpersonal relationships as well as compassion, empathy, and forgiveness. Practices emphasize upper-body work, especially yin-style backbends, with occasional hip opening. Yin poses are paired with affirmations repeated silently to observe emotional reactions rather than to force belief. Discomfort, tension, emotional response, or inner skepticism toward an affirmation can signal areas for further exploration and healing. Keeping a pen and paper nearby supports journaling insights that arise during practice.
