The Iran war is dividing Muslims in the Philippines
The US-Israeli war on Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz disrupted global trade and caused shortages of oil, liquified petroleum gas, and other products exported through the strait. Southeast Asian economies were paralysed, and the Philippines declared a state of emergency but still faced persistent shortages. Repeated protests erupted over price spikes. The Iran conflict also intensified polarization within Muslim communities, especially in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, among local Islamic scholars. Two social-media camps formed: one supported Iran’s retaliatory actions and framed them as restoring Muslim dignity, while the other opposed Iran by citing sectarian hostility toward Sunni communities and likening Shia to Zionists.
