Taiwan’s government urged the United States to approve the latest arms package for the island. President Donald Trump said he had not decided on future sales after a summit with China’s Xi Jinping, adding that he might approve additional sales or might not. The Trump administration previously approved a record $11 billion arms sale in December, while reports indicated a second deal worth about $14 billion awaited approval. Taiwan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi said Taiwan would keep communicating with the US to understand Washington’s position and declined to comment on the second package because it was not public. Taiwan’s spokesperson Karen Kuo said China’s military threat is the sole destabilizing factor and said US-Taiwan military sales reflect security commitments and provide mutual deterrence.
