"It is a quiet morning here in Dhaka, a stark contrast to election results days I've covered in South Asian neighbors India and Sri Lanka. Some tell me it is because the results were rolling in all night, which meant many political party supporters (as well as us journalists) were up until this morning, and may only come out later in the day."
Bangladesh Nationalist Party won a clear parliamentary majority, securing 209 seats with voter turnout of 59.44%. Tarique Rahman is expected to become prime minister, replacing the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. The BNP leads well ahead of the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance, which won 68 seats. The National Citizen Party won six seats, independents won seven, and other parties won five; two seats remained to be counted and one seat won by a deceased candidate was invalidated. Dhaka remained unusually quiet after results, partly because counts ran overnight and the BNP called for no victory rallies.
