"Provoke the PKI into taking action against the army or create the impression that it has then blame the PKI and use that as a pretext to crush them."
"A declassified document from November 1965 suggests that the idea for the kidnappings of the generals originated outside the PKI."

In October 1965, following a failed coup, the Indonesian army and its allies killed and imprisoned hundreds of thousands suspected of being communists, particularly targeting those of Chinese descent. A British Foreign Office memo from December 1964 suggested that a failed PKI coup could benefit the West. On September 30, 1965, the 'September 30 Movement' kidnapped and killed six generals, leading to mass persecution. Historical research indicates that the idea for the kidnappings may have originated outside the PKI, with significant Western support for the Indonesian army's actions.
