US envoy Steve Witkoff led a delegation to Egypt to support renewed indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel aimed at ending the Gaza war. The talks in Sharm el-Sheikh continued into a second day on the second anniversary of the Hamas surprise attack that triggered the conflict. Trump proposed a 20-point plan accepted in broad outlines by Netanyahu and Hamas as a negotiation basis, though both sides seek substantial changes. Egyptian officials said immediate priorities are a ceasefire, release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, and maps for phased Israeli withdrawals with UN-mediated humanitarian aid. Netanyahu vowed to pursue the return of abductees and the elimination of Hamas's rule. The UN secretary-general called for an end to hostilities amid an immense humanitarian catastrophe; Hamas militants killed about 1,200 people during the October 7 attack.
