"Ship's crew members sheltered in citadel Greek company Latsco Marine Management, which manages the ship, first raised the alarm of a "security incident" on Thursday morning but provided comparatively few details at first. Maritime risk management company Diapolous said that the 24 crew members had sought shelter in the ship's secure "citadel," remained there, and were safe. "All 24 crew are safe and accounted for and we remain in close contact with them," the ship's managing company Latsco said in a statement."
Armed individuals boarded the Maltese-flagged cargo ship Hellas Aphrodite off Somalia, firing small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. The ship was carrying gasoline and en route from India to South Africa. Crew members sheltered in the vessel's secure citadel; all 24 crew were reported safe and in contact with managers. Greek company Latsco Marine Management raised the alarm and described a security incident while the British UKMTO termed it an illegal boarding after a small craft approached and fired. The EU naval force Operation Atalanta said a vessel was near and headed to assist. The incident follows a recent uptick in attacks in the Horn of Africa.
