Sanae Takaichi, Japan's First Female Prime Minister, Is a Heavy Metal Drummer
"We have received particularly harsh criticism from our core supporters, conservatives, and party members,"
"The LDP must change for the sake of Japan's present and future. We will always put the national interest first and manage the country with a sense of balance."
"I play after [my husband] goes to sleep,"
Sanae Takaichi was elected Japan's first female Prime Minister. She is 64 and nicknamed the 'Iron Lady' for admiration of Margaret Thatcher and for an affinity for heavy metal bands such as Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple. Takaichi is a longtime amateur drummer who played in a college metal band and still uses an electronic kit for stress relief. A protégé of Shinzo Abe, she leads the traditionalist, male-dominated Liberal Democratic Party and sits on its right wing. Her leadership is expected to push the party further right while attempting to reclaim conservative voters from the far-right Sanseito. She has been re-elected nine times, held multiple cabinet posts including on gender equality and demographic issues, and chaired the party's Policy Research Council.
