Israeli forces cross key river as they push farther into Lebanon
Netanyahu said Israeli troops advanced to controlling positions north of the Litani River, about 30 km into southern Lebanon. US military officials hosted Israeli and Lebanese defense representatives in Washington to pursue a US-brokered plan for peace and disarmament of Iran-backed Hezbollah. The talks also sought to reinforce an April 16 ceasefire that failed to stop cross-border fighting. Israeli warplanes struck Lebanon’s south and east while Hezbollah fired drones and rockets into Israel. Israel expanded ground operations beyond a security zone occupied since April 16. Since March 2, when Hezbollah attacked in support of Iran, more than 1.2 million Lebanese have been displaced by Israeli strikes and evacuation orders. Lebanon’s health ministry attributed over 3,200 deaths to Israeli strikes on Lebanon’s south, east, and Beirut, while Israel reported 23 soldiers and four civilians killed over the same period.
""Our forces have crossed the Litani and advanced to controlling positions," Netanyahu said in remarks to military personnel, according to excerpts released by his office."
