Israeli forces intercepted and boarded the Global Sumud Flotilla, composed of over 40 civilian boats and about 500 activists seeking to establish a maritime corridor into Gaza. Organisers said naval forces boarded vessels about 70 nautical miles offshore, cut communications and jammed signals as the convoy approached. Activists reported shadowy encounters with unlit boats and drones prior to the boarding. Several ships — Alma, Adara and Sirius — were captured while others continued sailing roughly 40 nautical miles off Gaza. Israel had vowed to stop the flotilla, asserting volunteers tried to breach a lawful naval blockade. Gaza has been blockaded to varying degrees since 2007.
