Is Kabila's death sentence a threat to stability in DRC? DW 10/01/2025
"We are very concerned about the sentencing of [Joseph Kabila] by the military court,"
"This could end the process of peacefully resolving the country's political and security crisis."
"We regret that our government is not weighing the consequences of the important decisions that are currently being taken in Kinshasa,"
"This is a sham trial announced by the institutions of a dictatorial regime,"
Former President Joseph Kabila was convicted in absentia by a DRC military court of treason and war crimes, including murder, sexual assault, torture and insurrection. The court sentenced him to death and ordered approximately $33 billion in damages to the state and to North and South Kivu provinces. The court accused Kabila of backing the M23 rebel group, which has seized large parts of both Kivu provinces and established parallel administrations. President Félix Tshisekedi publicly accused Kabila of masterminding M23 operations, a claim Kabila denies. Supporters warned the verdict could be politically motivated and risk derailing peace and diplomatic efforts begun during the 2022 conflict.
