Australia lose to Sri Lanka by 8 wickets; stare at T20 World Cup exit
"Nissanka scored 100 not out off 52 balls with five sixes and 10 fours as Sri Lanka, chasing Australia's 181, reached 184-2 with two overs to spare in Kandy to win by eight wickets on Monday. We're in the lap of the Gods now I think, Australia captain Mitchell Marsh said after the match. Lot of emotions in the room right now, he said of the 2021 champions. Haven't been at our best. Disappointed bunch at the moment."
"Nissanka was involved in a 97-run stand off 66 balls with Kusal Mendis for the second wicket with the wicketkeeper-batsman posting his third fifty in the competition. Nissanka became the first Sri Lankan to score two hundreds in T20 internationals. After Mendis's dismissal, Nissanka and Pavan Rathnayake put on 76 off 34 balls to see Sri Lanka to victory. Nissanka played some glorious cover drives off the spinners and played some elegant flicks against the quicks."
Pathum Nissanka scored an unbeaten 100 off 52 balls, including five sixes and 10 fours, as Sri Lanka chased down Australia's 181 to finish 184-2 with two overs remaining. Nissanka shared a 97-run partnership with Kusal Mendis and later added 76 with Pavan Rathnayake to secure the victory. Nissanka became the first Sri Lankan to score two T20 international centuries and recorded the tournament's first century. Australia posted 181 with Mitchell Marsh (54) and Travis Head (56) putting on a 104-run opening stand, but Sri Lanka's spinners, led by Dushan Hemantha (3-37), restricted the total. Sri Lanka have won all three group games while Australia now face possible elimination amid injury and inconsistent form.
