What your favourite drink says about you, according to science
"Learned associations for different alcoholic drinks can influence how people feel, which in turn might shape their intentions, choices and social expectations. These studies helped us identify common cultural associations, which we call 'learned associations,' or ideas people develop through experience and cultural exposure."
"Importantly, participants did not consume alcohol, allowing us to isolate the learned associations these drinks evoke, separate from alcohol's physiological effects. The results revealed 'clear patterns' showing that wine suggests elegance and sophistication, whisky suggests strength and confidence, and tequila suggests fun and wildness."
Researchers from the University of Evansville conducted four studies with 429 participants to examine cultural associations linked to different alcoholic beverages. Participants were asked to identify words and personality qualities associated with wine, whisky, and tequila without consuming alcohol. The studies revealed clear patterns: wine drinkers are perceived as elegant, classy, and sophisticated; whisky drinkers as strong, confident, and masculine; and tequila drinkers as fun, wild, and party-oriented. These learned associations develop through experience and cultural exposure, influencing how people feel about drinks and shaping their social expectations and choices.
