An Ode to Napa's Century-Old Historic Wineries
Charles Krug began public tastings in 1882 and now operates eight vineyards, including an original estate planted in 1861; the Mondavi family bought the winery in 1943. Tastings run daily for $45 with reservations strongly encouraged, and pairings include Cucina de Rosa Salumeria small bites or wood-fired pizza from a Thursday-through-Monday outdoor oven. Freemark Abbey claims firsts including being the first female-owned and operated winery, the first California winery to compete in the Judgement of Paris, and an early 1949 sampling room. The 1898 stone-constructed winery hosts daily $35 tastings with reservations needed, featuring reds and whites from Rutherford and Spring Mountain, including a 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon with dark cherry, Santa Rosa plum, and black currant aromas.
