Senator Adam Schiff repeatedly pressed for a yes-or-no answer on whether any FBI employees were fired in whole or in part for those investigations. Patel responded that any terminations were based on failures to meet standards, uphold the constitutional oath, and effectuate the bureau's mission. Three former FBI officials have since sued Patel, alleging retaliatory firings. Senator Cory Booker also challenged Patel's fitness and impact on national unity.
