Year in Review: What Gave Us Hope in a Dark 2025 - Streetsblog USA
"Streetsblog provides high-quality journalism and analysis for free - which is something to be celebrated in an era of paywalls. Once a year, we ask for your tax-deductible donations to support our reporters and editors as they advance the movement to end car dependency and strengthen our communities. If you already support our work, thank you! If not, can we ask for your help? Together, we can create a walkable, bikeable, equitable and enjoyable USA for all. Happy holidays from the Streetsblog team!"
"If you read yesterday's post, you'll know much of that hope was later dashed when the Trump administration impounded, rescinded, pocket-rescinded, and reconciled away much of that money through just about every legal (and questionably legal) mechanism they could think of. But it's critical to remember just how many Americans want these types of projects, and celebrated when they got them - and let that memory fuel the fight to restore that funding and more."
Streetsblog requests tax-deductible donations to sustain free journalism and to advance efforts to end car dependency, promoting walkable, bikeable, equitable communities. The year brought both setbacks and reasons for hope for transportation reform advocates across the United States. Local movements showed growing support for ending car dependency and planted seeds for stronger policy in 2026. Significant federal grants were awarded for transit, biking, walking, and mobility justice. Much of that funding was later impounded or rescinded by the Trump administration through various legal and questionable mechanisms. Public celebration over awarded projects can motivate campaigns to restore and expand funding.
