At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story."
"A woman was wrongly denied disability benefits worth over 3,800 a year for being able to do up her bra backwards, a tribunal has ruled. The anonymous applicant narrowly missed out on being awarded the personal independence payment (PIP) after assessors said doing a bra up at the front and then swivelling it to the back was evidence that she had no trouble dressing herself."
The Independent covers developing stories across reproductive rights, climate change and Big Tech and keeps journalism free of paywalls funded by donations. A woman was wrongly denied personal independence payment worth £3,842.80 a year after assessors judged that doing up a bra at the front and swivelling it to the back showed no dressing difficulty. The woman has arthritic pain and numbness in her wrists and hand and provided oral evidence in a telephone assessment. The first-tier tribunal refused permission to appeal, but the upper-tier tribunal, heard by Judge Mark West, found the first-tier tribunal erred in law by concluding the appellant should change dressing technique and ignoring the limiting effects of her condition.
