What it was really like to live in the Home Alone house
"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story."
"When director Chris Columbus decided he wanted to use 671 Lincoln Avenue in the Chicago suburb of Winnetka as the setting for Home Alone, he described the stately five-bedroom Georgian house as warm and menacing. This came as a surprise to John Abendshien, who owned it. I thought, what on earth does he mean by menacing'! Abendshien recalled with a chuckle to The Independent. I always thought it had a warm vibe! But when I saw the completed film for the first time, and the scene where Kevin is preparing to do battle with the Wet Bandits, with John Williams' soundtrack in the background, and those eerie lights coming out of the house, I thought yes, I get the menacing' bit now!"
The Independent reports on major issues including reproductive rights, climate change, and Big Tech, emphasizing on-the-ground journalism and investigative work. The outlet investigates political financing and produces documentaries highlighting American women fighting for reproductive rights. The Independent relies on reader donations to fund reporters and chooses not to use paywalls, believing quality journalism should be available to everyone and paid for by those who can afford it. The Home Alone filming location at 671 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka is a five-bedroom Georgian house described as both warm and menacing, and the film became a long-standing Christmas classic.
