Federal officials and agents in Portland have become increasingly hostile toward immigrants and people protesting immigration policy. Customs and Border Patrol officers reportedly shot and injured two people in East Portland, and federal agents deployed large quantities of tear gas against peaceful protesters, including children and elderly people. Those incidents have prompted stronger calls for local action. Dozens of Oregon labor unions sent a February 5 letter urging Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez and Portland Mayor Keith Wilson to take immediate action, seek enforcement of new city codes targeting detention centers, and investigate and prosecute federal officers for potentially illegal conduct.
