"Minnesota, New York, California, Illinois, and Colorado will be cut off from around $7 billion in funding for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, which provides cash assistance to households with children, according to two people familiar with the matter. The five states will also lose access to nearly $2.4 billion for the Child Care and Development Fund, which supports child care for working parents, and around $870 million for social services grants that mostly benefit children at risk, the people said."
Federal officials will pause around $7 billion in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funds for five states—Minnesota, New York, California, Illinois, and Colorado. The pause also affects nearly $2.4 billion for the Child Care and Development Fund and about $870 million in social services grants. The funding halt could jeopardize programs serving hundreds of thousands of low-income households. The pause is framed as politically motivated retribution against state leaders and policies. The TANF program previously fueled a Mississippi scandal involving celebrity beneficiaries, including Brett Favre. Ted DiBiase Jr. pleaded not guilty this week to charges of defrauding two federal programs.
