Virginia Democrats show map to counter Trump redistricting but its future is unclear
""Donald Trump knows he's going to lose the midterms. He knows it. That's why he's started this mess in the first place," Lucas told reporters Thursday earlier."
""Today we are leveling the playing field. These are not ordinary times, and Virginia will not sit on the sidelines while it happens.""
""court shopping""
Virginia Democrats unveiled a proposed congressional map intended to help the party win four additional House seats in the upcoming midterm elections. The state's current House delegation has six Democrats and five Republicans. The map and legislation were posted on the legislature's website and were confirmed by Senate President Pro Tempore Louise Lucas. The plan requires legislative approval and voter approval of a constitutional amendment in a special election scheduled for April 21, pending Governor Abigail Spanberger's decision by Feb. 11. The amendment would sideline a bipartisan redistricting commission. A circuit court judge found that Democrats did not follow the law in the amendment process; Democrats appealed and accused Republicans of "court shopping," and a Virginia appeals court asked the state Supreme Court to consider the case.
