Gabavics claimed that Abu Akleh is among several American citizens killed by the Israeli military for whom the US has taken no action to hold Israel accountable."
Steve Gabavics, a colonel-turned-whistleblower, was sent by the United States Department of State to investigate Shireen Abu Akleh's killing in 2022. Gabavics determined that Israeli forces intentionally killed Abu Akleh, firing 16 times at her while she wore a blue vest clearly marked "press." The U.S. State Department formally labeled the killing accidental. The labeling occurred, according to Gabavics, to avoid angering the Israeli government. Gabavics asserted that Abu Akleh is one of several American citizens killed by the Israeli military for whom the United States has taken no accountability actions.
