The Federal Communications Commission added foreign-made unmanned aircraft systems and their critical components to the Covered List, prohibiting their import into the United States. Several national security agencies determined that UAS produced abroad pose an unacceptable risk to U.S. national security. The FCC warned that UAS and associated components can enable persistent surveillance, data exfiltration, and destructive operations over U.S. territory, including major event venues. The rule requires UAS and critical components to be produced in the United States. The ban applies only to upcoming models; previously purchased and already-approved models may continue to be used and sold. The Department of Defense or the Department of Homeland Security may grant specific exceptions.
