Supreme Court struck down many tariffs introduced under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, including last April's 'Liberation Day' measures. President Trump announced a new 10% global tariff and said he would seek to reintroduce struck-down tariffs through alternative legal mechanisms. The ruling removed the 10% additional tariffs previously applied to the UK but left sector-specific duties on steel, aluminium, pharmaceuticals, automobiles and aerospace unaffected. Existing sectoral trade deals secured by the UK remain in force. A White House official said countries that had negotiated specific rates will now face the 10% global tariff while being expected to honour prior concessions. The British Chamber of Commerce warned the decision maintains business uncertainty and urged continued negotiation to reduce tariffs.
