Trump says he will take legal action against BBC, despite its apology
"On Friday evening, the US president told reporters aboard Air Force One we'll sue them for anywhere between a billion and $5bn, probably sometime next week. We have to do it. The BBC sent a personal apology to Trump on Thursday, but said there was no legal basis for him to sue the public broadcaster over a documentary his lawyers called defamatory."
"The corporation rejected his demands for compensation, after lawyers for Trump threatened to sue for $1bn (760m) in damages unless the BBC issued a retraction, apologised and settled with him. The BBC has also agreed not to show the edition of Panorama again. The president said he had not yet discussed the potential lawsuit with the UK prime minister, Keir Starmer, but would do so over the weekend."
President Donald Trump announced plans to file legal action against the BBC next week, seeking between one billion and five billion dollars in damages over a misleadingly edited speech clip. The BBC issued a personal apology and agreed not to rebroadcast the Panorama episode, while rejecting legal liability and refusing compensation demands. Trump's lawyers had threatened a $1bn claim unless the BBC retracted, apologised and settled. The controversy led to the resignations of BBC director general Tim Davie and BBC News chief Deborah Turness. The spliced clip combined remarks made almost an hour apart, implying an instruction to march on the Capitol.
