Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry visited Nuuk, Greenland, to build local support for a potential U.S. annexation. He handed out red MAGA hats to children, with assistants carrying boxes of hats. Adults responded negatively, showing scowls and disapproval. Landry also offered cookies to children, promising unlimited chocolate chip cookies if they visited his Louisiana home. Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen rebuked the effort, saying Greenland has red lines and that receiving cookies would not change their position. After Trump’s 2024 election, annexation became a priority, but Greenlanders largely opposed it and the proposal risked broader conflict. Trump later backed down without renouncing the goal.

"Landry landed in Greenland's capital, Nuuk, on Sunday and immediately began handing out red MAGA hats to children, with several of his assistants carrying "cardboard boxes stuffed with MAGA hats." Several "shook their heads" and he was met with "scowls" from the grownups, according to the New York Times."

"He then tried to entice the children to support the annexation of their country by offering them cookies, telling them that if they visited his home in Louisiana, they could have "all the chocolate chip cookies you can eat." That line earned him a rebuke from Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen. "We have our red lines," he told the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, DR."

""No matter how many chocolate cookies we get, we are not going to change them." Shortly after he won the 2024 presidential election, Trump made annexing Greenland into the U.S. a priority for his administration. Greenland is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark, and Denmark, as a NATO member state, is ostensibly an ally of the U.S."

"The proposed annexation of Greenland was a particularly hostile move that risked war with Europe, and the Trump administration refused to say that it would not use force to take the land whose population is around 90% Inuit. Trump eventually backed down, but never renounced his goal of annexing Greenland, despite Greenlanders' overwhelming opposition to the idea."
