It's horrible,' the official told the Bulwark relaying the sentiments of a current DHS official."

Former and current DHS officials describe the situation inside the department as fluid and highly troubled. White House officials express frustration with Noem's leadership and her employment of chief advisor Corey Lewandowski, who has been characterized as having an outsized role; Lewandowski denied those characterizations. Term-limited Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin has reportedly been floated as a potential replacement after he leaves office in mid-January. Noem has publicly praised Trump and sought to remain in his favor.
