The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends delaying gender-related surgery until patients are at least 19 years old. ASPS says the new position is not a reversal and is not a clinical practice guideline, but an articulation of recommendations given the current state of evidence and variability in legal and regulatory environments. The Trump administration praised the ASPS statement as affirming biological truth. Twenty-seven states have bans restricting gender-affirming care for minors. Federal actions include an executive order barring funding or support for child transition, HHS reports critical of supporting research, DOJ subpoenas of children's hospitals, and a proposed rule to withhold Medicare and Medicaid funding from hospitals providing such care to minors.
