A Maine mother and her three teenage children were detained by federal immigration agents at the Canadian border and transferred to Texas. Two of the teenagers attend Portland Public Schools, one at Casco Bay High School and one at Deering High School. Portland Public Schools described the sudden removal of students from class as traumatic and affirmed commitment to serving all students regardless of immigration status. Canada Border Services Agency returned the family unit to a New York port of entry on Nov. 12 after denying asylum. The family entered the U.S. near San Luis, Arizona, in 2022. A GoFundMe is raising money for legal representation and bond; ICE records list the mother and one teen at a South Texas family detention center while juveniles do not appear in the tracker.
