Top immigration officials to testify before Senate as a potential DHS shutdown looms
""I'm going to ask the head of ICE on Thursday, what is the appropriate use of force? Some of these are women being thrown to the ground where the woman probably is maybe saying something nasty, something bad, or protesting, but you shouldn't throw somebody to the ground for being obnoxious," he said, adding that he had concerns with the use of weapons. "Something's got to be done better.""
"Watch the hearing, set for 9 a.m. ET Thursday, live: Thursday's hearing was called for by the committee's chairman, Rand Paul, following the killing of 37-year-old Alex Pretti, who was shot multiple times by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis. During a town hall this week, the Kentucky Republican previewed the hearing, noting that he wanted to focus on the use of force by federal agents."
Top officials from ICE, CBP and USCIS will testify before the Senate Homeland Security Committee one day before DHS funding could lapse. The witnesses include ICE acting Director Todd Lyons, CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott and USCIS Director Joseph Edlow. Senate committee chairman Rand Paul called the hearing after federal immigration officers fatally shot 37-year-old Alex Pretti in Minneapolis and said he will press on use-of-force practices. Last month the Senate removed DHS funding from a broader spending bill, and Democrats insist on reforms before approving new funding. Democrats on the committee demanded measures such as body cameras, judicial warrants and bans on certain tactical practices.
