"Millions of Americans who might have managed to get through the first ten months of this administration unscathed are now finding that they are not immune from this president's prioritization of power over people. Every day I hear from more friends whose healthcare premiums are skyrocketing to unaffordable heights. Federal workers have been without pay throughout the long government shutdown. Bay Area companies are announcing huge layoffs."
"Clearly, we can no longer count on the government to help us. But we do have each other. This is a time when we all need to pitch in to help our neighbors, and the most urgent needs are the most basic ones: people need to eat every day. Our food banks are being stretched beyond capacity by the growing need for their services, so donating to, and volunteering for, your local food bank is a great place to start."
Economic strain, rising health-care premiums, long government shutdowns, layoffs, reductions in SNAP benefits, and ICE raids are producing widespread fear, food insecurity, and financial distress. Neighbors and community organizations need to fill urgent gaps in basic needs, especially daily food. Food banks and meal services are stretched beyond capacity and are best positioned to determine client needs; monetary donations are more effective than donated groceries. Mutual aid networks operate hyperlocally, often without websites, and churches and nonprofits play critical roles in delivering food and services to those facing immediate hardship.
