The Department of Justice created a $1.776 billion fund as part of a settlement involving Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service over the 2019 leak of his tax returns. The fund drew widespread Republican criticism after it was announced. Sen. Thom Tillis urged colleagues to oppose the policy, calling it beyond the pale and describing it as “stupid on stilts.” He argued that people who breached the Capitol on January 6 should be in prison rather than receiving money from the fund. Tillis said other lawmakers shared his concerns and should speak up, citing negative political and timing impacts ahead of the midterm elections. At least six other Republican lawmakers also criticized the fund or potential payments related to Jan. 6 assaults on police.
"When asked if his fellow lawmakers shared his concerns, Tillis claimed they did, telling reporters the policy was not good for his colleagues, especially in the lead-up to the midterm elections. They do, and they need to speak up. I mean, this is beyond the pale. This is not good for my colleagues. There's not one positive thing that could be spun out of this between now and November, he said. This is bad policy. It's bad timing, and it's bad politics."
