"They're trying to kill us": Ron DeSantis launches his latest broadside against the LGBTQ+ community & PLWH - Queerty
"Florida governor Ron DeSantis has been coming for LGBTQ+ people for years in the form of trans bathroom bans, book bans and censures on queer content in schools. Now, Florida appears to be waging an outright onslaught on PLWH with onerous eligibility requirements for free and subsidized treatment. As reported by the Washington Post and across social media, tightened requirements for HIV care mean that over 16,000 patients are at risk of losing treatment they've been guaranteed for decades."
"While i hold no official capacity outside of "the office of citizen" to extend aid to Floridians in this time of emergent need, know that i will use the full leverage of my influence in joint effort with our partners here in philadelphia to stand and fight with you. know that philadelphia is holding you in our prayer and shared humanity."
Florida will tighten eligibility for free and subsidized HIV treatment by lowering the income threshold from about $64,000 to $21,000, effective in March. More than 16,000 people living with HIV are estimated to lose assistance for medications or health-plan premiums. Drug prices remain high, so affected patients will face increased financial barriers to lifesaving therapy. Civic leaders and advocacy organizations have mobilized support, posted hotline contacts, and pointed to pharmaceutical assistance resources as temporary alternatives. The change risks treatment interruptions and severe health consequences for those excluded from the program.
