The middle class doesn't have to keep shrinking, Globe Summit speakers tell audience
"If you look at our economy, we've done very well with very high income jobs, but there are so many companies who need people who may not have college degrees, but are still really talented and have great upside,"
"A lot of those middle-class jobs went to other states because we weren't intentional about keeping them here."
"[People] all of a sudden focus so much on the today and do not take the risks of starting a business, switching careers on all of the things that we need in a tech heavy knowledge economy, heavy state like Massachusetts, but all around the country,"
"People then, [are] not just ashamed, they lack that peace of mind."
Income and wealth inequality in Massachusetts has widened, reducing financial security for many middle-class residents. The state economy contains abundant high-income, knowledge-sector roles but lacks sufficient mid-wage positions for talented workers without college degrees. Many middle-class jobs relocated to other states due to a lack of intentional retention strategies. Financial insecurity discourages entrepreneurship, career changes, and other risk-taking needed in a tech-heavy, knowledge-based economy. Starting and growing companies statewide and intentionally creating accessible, well-paying roles for non-degree workers can expand opportunities and rebuild peace of mind and stability for middle-class households.
