The designation aims to leverage Coast Guard authorities to control, secure and defend U.S. borders and maritime approaches and to dismantle transnational criminal organizations, drug and human smuggling, and narcoterrorist activity. The Trump administration is deploying 60 to 100 Border Patrol agents to the base. Since May, ICE and CBP have escalated operations in the Bay Area, seeking dismissal of undocumented immigrants' asylum cases and arresting people outside courtrooms and ICE field offices. San Francisco reported more than 2,000 arrests in its area of responsibility.
