"The last penny was minted on Wednesday afternoon at the US Mint in Philadelphia, overseen by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Treasurer Brandon Beach. President Donald Trump announced via social media in February that he instructed the Mint to stop making the once-popular coin, citing the cost of production. The last U.S. penny to be minted happened in Philadelphia on Nov. 11, 2025"
"For a coin that seems obsolete, its removal from circulation is causing more problems than expected, especially for retailers. Some merchants plan to round prices to the nearest nickel, often a penny or two more. Others are asking customers to pay with pennies to help supply. But in some states, merchants could face legal trouble for rounding up or down."
The U.S. penny was retired after 238 years, with the last one minted in Philadelphia on Nov. 11, 2025. Production costs exceeded face value, costing nearly four cents per coin, prompting the Mint to stop manufacturing pennies while they remain legal tender. The penny circulates mainly in jars, junk drawers and small change trays. Retailers face issues from the phase-out: some will round prices to the nearest nickel, some will ask customers to pay with pennies, and some face legal limits on rounding. Increased nickel production could offset savings, and pro-penny groups warn of supply problems for retailers.
