Pete Buttigieg leads in a poll for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, receiving 16% support. Kamala Harris follows with 13%, while Gavin Newsom gains 12%. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Josh Shapiro both receive 7%. Notably, 23% of respondents are undecided. Buttigieg's potential nomination would make him the first openly gay Democratic nominee. Concurrently, JD Vance leads the Republican field with 46%, followed by Marco Rubio at 12%. This poll reflects a significant inclination among Democrats towards Buttigieg, who previously made history as the first openly gay cabinet member in U.S. history.
Buttigieg received the most support out of any potential candidate and garnered 16 per cent of the vote, even beating out Harris, who secured 13 per cent.
Most respondents - 23 per cent - said however that they were 'undecided', indicating a significant portion of the electorate remains unsure of their preferred nominee.
Buttigieg, who made history when he was confirmed by the Senate as secretary of transportation in 2020, would be the first openly gay person to be the presidential nominee for the Democrats.
Vance was followed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, who trailed far behind in second place with only 12 per cent support from GOP voters.
